COP30 Presidency Backs First International Conference on the Phase-Out of Fossil Fuels
Let’s get the bad news out of the way first. Yes, COP30 fell short of expectations - “fossil fuels” were not mentioned in the final text, despite that term being present in the final text two years ago in Dubai’s COP28. Yet, most of the real work happens outside of conferences regardless.
Accordingly, countries that have been taking the lead in an international push towards phasing out fossil fuels now have the backing of Brazil’s COP30 presidency for an international conference in April 2026.
This is set to happen earlier than the next COP and will enable countries that join to collaborate more urgently. So far, 18 nation-states have joined the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative, which aims to set up binding international agreements.
